The humanitarian response in the Canary Islands to the reactivation of the migration route
AUTHORS
Zahra Zerbaoui
DESCRIPTION
Over the past two years, the Canary Islands has gone through a period marked by the increasing arrival of migrants by sea, coinciding with the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The institutional response to this challenge ended with migrants being partially restricted to the islands for several months, creating a situation that led to considerable local confusion, chaos and even a perception of disarray in terms of how this migratory influx was being managed. Faced with this reality, the citizens have mobilised to offer their support by providing temporary housing to the large number of migrants involved and who continue to arrive on the islands, primarily with the aim of making available reception conditions that are favourable, dignified and respectful of human rights.
